Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull is a slice-of-life drama set in the Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century. The story follows the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters who are all dissatisfied with their lives: the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina, and her son the symbolist playwright Konstantin Treplev. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some artistic genius. No one, however, ever seems to attain happiness. The Seagull is at once a tragedy about eternally unhappy people, a humorous albeit bitter satire, that pokes fun at human folly, and a four act drama that deals with lost opportunities and the timeless clash between generations.
